Flat cars have no sides. They often carry highway trailers or intermodal containers that are used to transport consumer goods such as electronics, clothing, and hardware; but can also be used for smaller shipments of hazardous materials. Flat cars may also carry irregularly shaped freight such as logs, pipe, steel plates, and military equipment.
